For the Casserole

  • 800 g Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced Russets hold shape; Yukon Gold adds buttery flavor.
  • 450 g Ground beef (80/20 or 90/10) Use lean beef to reduce fat content.
  • 1 can Cream of mushroom soup For the sauce base.
  • 240 ml Milk To smoothen the sauce.
  • 1 tsp Salt To taste.
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper To taste.
  • 300 g Shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice) Full-fat or reduced-fat options available.
  • 1 medium Onion, chopped For added flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a skillet, brown the ground beef and onion over medium heat; drain excess fat.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and pepper.
  • In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by the ground beef mixture, and half of the shredded cheese.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef, and top with the remaining cheese.

Baking

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly.
