A bold mashup combining classic Philly flavor and sloppy joe comfort for a weeknight winner.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 small green bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup milk (warm)
  • 1 cup shredded provolone or white American cheese
  • 4 brioche or hamburger buns (toasted)
  • 1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns)
  • Extra provolone or cheddar cheese slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high, add beef, break up with a spatula, cook until browned, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add onion, bell pepper, garlic to skillet, sauté 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in Worcestershire, ketchup, Dijon, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, simmer 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Melt 1 tbsp butter in small saucepan, stir in flour, cook 1 minute, whisk in warm milk until smooth, add shredded cheese until melted.
  5. Spread butter on bun insides, toast in hot pan 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Spoon beef mixture onto buns, drizzle cheese sauce, add extra slices if desired.

Notes

This recipe can be easily scaled for larger gatherings, and leftovers refrigerate well. Try variations to accommodate dietary needs.
